Student Success Statement - 3/23/2018

"My basic principle is that you don't make decisions because they are easy; you don't make them because they are cheap; you don't make them because they're popular; you make them because they're right." - Theodore Hesburgh  This quote is being said by former President of Notre Dame, Theodore Hesburgh. He is saying that all the decisions we make should be driven by the concept that the choice you are making is what is right. Many times people don't make decisions bcause it is the best choice but some people make them because it is what everyone else is doing. Just because everyone else is doing something it doesn't mean that it is automatically wrong, sometimes the popular choice is the best choice.  There have been many times when people have chosen something because it is popular and I don't think that is right. I feel like this quote is something many people should think about when making choices.

"I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong." - Abraham Lincoln I agree with this quote that is being said by the former president, Abraham Lincoln. He was a very honest man from what i heard in class and seemed to always be true to himself. I agree and also live by this quote. In the 7th grade I had friends that were nice and honest, they  had been my friends for several years and felt a strong connection with them and i was driven to their personalities because they were so nice. Slowly, my friends began to change. they began talking bad things about everyone, even me. So i knew what i had to do and I drifted a part from them. I felt a little sad but i knew it was rhe right decision because if i had continued being friends with them I would have turned into the negative people they had become. "Character is higher than intellect." - Ralph Waldo Emerson  I agree with this quote. I agree with this quote because it i true and is important to remember. This quote, in my opinion, means that it is better to be a good person than a smart person or that attitude matters more than grades. I think this quote really shows what true importance is. It is important to have a positive and happy attitude because it could cheer someones day up. Also, manypeople look for a person with a good attitude and not someone that is mean.

Student Success Statement - March 9, 2018

" I trust that my hard work will pay off " - Tyler Haws  This quote is being said by a formal BYU student. He played basketball for the school team and was very successful. This quote was said by him when talking about him playing. I agree with this quote  because when you are optomistic and positive about something, like hard work paying off, it will happen if you trust yourself. I work hard for many things like school and while I was  playing a sport I would but all my effort in. I always made sure I had a good minset about everything and that i trusted myself and God. When I began trusting myself I noticed I had more success, so i started doing that more often. After a while I started noticing the long term affects of me trusting myself. I was on honor roll and my teachers all believed in me and thought positively about me.

"True independance and freedom can only exist in doing what'a right" - Brigham Young  This quote is being said by the founder and creater of Brigham Young Univeristy. He was a very virtouis and rightful person. He was a CTR person and passed that onto the students that attend BYU. This quote, to me, means that in order to be free of everyone you need to make good decisions. In a way that is correct but at the same time the quote contradicts itself because this quote is saying that the only way to have freedom is making good decisions. If you had the freedom to do what you wanted you would not have to make the right decision. Therefor, the only way to have freedom is to have the right to make your own decisions that you want to do. For example, if I didn't want to go somewhere but knew I should be there , this quote is saying I should do what is right and go and I will be free and independant but if i dont go i am not m,aking a good decisions. But inrealiy making my

"They're only truly great who are truly good." - George Chapman This quote doesn't really make sense to me, i guess it was supposed to say "Those who are great, are truly good." When the quote is put that way then i agree. I agree because when someone is good that has to mean that all aspects of them are good. If someone is good but lies then they are not good. For example, a good baseball player. If they are good on the field but a bad husband, they are no longer good. Also if a good baseball player is good on the field but uses steroids then they are no longer good. You have to be completely good to be considered a genuinely good person. I aspire to be a good person, I am not a bad person but I am neither a genuinely good human being.

"Many think that the short term gain will be worth the long term pain, but it isn't. In addition, using steroids is cheating, and there is nothing worse in sports than a cheater. Don't do it." -George Mitchell This quote is being said by the Senate Majority Leader. This man should know a lot about the effects of cheating because if he were to cheat it ould affect several people. I believe many people dont understand the consequence of cheating which is why they do it. They dont realize the harm they are inflicting on themselves and the people around them. I think that the short term gain is not worth the long term pain. I believe that cheating is extremely wrong and should never be done because it  not only affects the person doing the act but also the people around the person.
